Revision 4 - 15 March 2001, Jason Herrington
Olympus Vanox Microscope

Olympus Vanox Microscope

These instructions are for taking a picture, saving the picture and illuminating a sample. Note that these instructions do not include illumination for the cameras. For using the cameras contact a MiRC technical staff member.

Taking Pictures with the Video Camera

  1. If the Aver VideoCommander application is not open, double-click on the AVer VideoCommander icon in Windows Program Manager.
  2. When you have the desired image displayed on the screen, choose File then Save from the menu at the top of the window.
  3. To access the image from outside the lab, save the image to drive D. If you are not sure which file format to use, use "JPEG."
  4. You can get your picture from another computer through the 'Data and Information' pages on this server (starting from the main page) with a web browser. If you are using Netscape or Internet Explorer, you can save the image from the web browser by right-clicking on the image.
  5. Your image will be automatically deleted after ten days. We do not have the storage capacity to permanently store your image. Please remember to save your images to your own computer after taking them.
  6. You may not delete an image you have saved or overwrite it. This is to keep users from accidently or intentianaly removing another user's image before they have a chance to save it. Your image will be automatically removed after ten days.

Saving Pictures from the Olympus Microscope

Choosing the software:

There are two software packages available for viewing pictures from the microscope. They are DiasWin and AVer Video Commander.

Diaswin gives measurements on the screen. The drawback with this software is that you cannot save pictures on the network using this software.

To save on the network you need to use the second software. It is called Aver Video Commander. This software does not give any measurements.

Instructions for saving on the network

To save on the network you need to be using the Aver Video Commander Software. Go to the image menu and choose save and then choose D drive. Once it is saved it immediately becomes available on the Internet.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ILLUMINATING A SAMPLE

These instructions are for illuminating a sample on the microscope. Note that these instructions do not include illumination for the cameras. For using the cameras contact a MiRC technical staff member.
Microscope Bottom Control
1. Main Lamp Power
2. Lamp Intensity Control
3. Blue Filter
4. Frontside/Backside Illumination Selector
5. Lower Level Aperture Control
Note: All instructions in this set reference the picture immediatly above.
  1. First turn on the main power for the lamp (1).
  2. Make sure the lamp intensity control (2) is in the MAX position.
  3. If you want blue light push tab (3) in. If you want white, orange, or green light, pull tab (3) out.
  4. If you want to illuminate your sample from above, push tab (4) in. If you want to illuminate your sample from below, pull tab (4) out.
  5. If you are using illumination from below, wheel (5) controls the intensity of the light reaching your sample.
Microscope Top Control
1.ORANGE FILTER
2.GREEN FILTER
3.UPPER APERATURE
4.UPPER FIELD
5.UPPER POLARIZER
6.Dark Field/Light Field selector
7.Intensifier for Bright Field Mode
Note: All instructions in this set reference the picture immediatly above.
  1. If you want orange light pull tab (1) out. For white or green light push tab (1) in.
  2. If you want green light pull tab (2) out. If you want white light push tab (2) in.
  3. Initially open the aperture completely by turning wheel (3) all the way up. This can be fine tuned as needed. It will change the intensity of the light hitting your sample.
  4. Initially open the field completely by turning wheel (4) all the way up. This will increase the diameter of the circle of light hitting your sample.
  5. If you wish to have polarized light, pull tab (5) out.
  6. To see if the light is the brightest possible, pull out then press in tab (7). If the intensity of the light did not change then you are at the brightest level. If you wish to dim the light, press tab (7) all the way in then pull tab (6) all the way out then push it all the way back in. To reset it to the brightest level, pull out then push back in tab (7).

WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED: TURN THE MAIN POWER OFF (top picture in the instructions section, reference point 1)
